Hell
Marys Continue Work On a Perfect League Season
Bout
recap by Phil Arnold
July 1, 2007
Even though the Hell
Marys were short a couple of physical blockers, they continued
their winning ways Sunday night defeating a talented Dallas Derby
Devils all-star squad, 92-50. In the second game of the night
the Hustlers beat a depleted Honky Tonk Heartbreakers squad 73-26
in Texas Rollergirls action.
The team from Dallas
would actually open up a lead early in the opening bout, scoring
three points by Ali Gorey in the first jam to take a 3-0 lead.
And still holding onto an 8-6 lead after the fourth jam of the
bout, the Devilish all stars had to be encouraged. But the Hell
Marys would soon change encouragement into discouragement as Bloody
Mary would bust out of the pack and score 14 points during the
fifth jam, while her defense shut out Dallas. The team in red
plaid would keep drawing the lead out until they had a 45-22 lead
at the half.
The Hell Marys
would continue their combination of offense and defense and build
the lead up with a dominating second half outscoring the Derby
Devils 47-28. And while the scoring went to the Hell Marys, the
team in black would make a point in the second half that they
would not be intimidated or physically dominated. Barooski, Scary
Cherry Bang Bang, and Shocker would come out knocking Hell Marys
down whenever possible. And while Dallas would get physical a
tall jammer would display both power and speed in the half. Lady
X, who doesn’t skate like a rookie, would score 19 points
in the last period to keep the Derby Devils out of the game at
least on the scoreboard.
Leading scorers for
the Hell Marys were Bloody Mary with 34 points, while Lady X and
Buckshot Betsy each tallied 24 points. The leading scorer for
Dallas was Ali Gorey with 21 points followed by Anita Riot with
13 points. Top blockers for the team in plaid were Sparkle Plenty,
Muffin Tumble, and Apocalippz, with the team blocking doing a
great job slowing down opposing jammers and recovering to keep
the Derby scorers from getting through the pack. In addition to
Barooski, Scary Cherry Bang Bang, and Shocker other blockers for
Dallas playing well included Cheaten’ Chong, Keltic Kamikaze,
and Razen Kane.
In the second game
of the night the Hustlers won their first game of the regular
Texas Rollergirls’ league season against the Honky Tonk
Heartbreakers. While the team in purple was missing all stars
Lady Stardust and Slim Kickins, they still had plenty of depth
compared to the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers who were down to nine
skaters for the night. The team in purple would draw out to a
24-2 lead with Dinah Mite scoring a decisive 10-point jam during
the fifth jam of the night. The ‘70s divas would steadily
increase their lead to a 42-9 advantage at half time.
The Hustlers would
come out in the second half on fire again outscoring the Heartbreakers
16-4 in the first five jams. After that it was pretty much a chance
for skaters who normally don’t jam for the team in purple
to take a shot at scoring points. The jammer-short Honky Tonks
would score more points this half largely behind rookie jammer
Olivia Shootin’ John. Missing all stars Trouble and Belle
Starr and injured rookie jammer Mary Lou Threaten would make it
a tough night for the team in blue. In the mean time, the Hustlers
would send nine of their skaters out jamming during the bout..
Leading scorers for
the ‘70s Divas included Barbarella and Pussy Velour each
with 15 points, and rookie Das It with 14 points. Olivia Shootin’
John was the high scorer for the game with 18 points, but no other
Heartbreaker would score in double figures. Still, the team in
blue would have their physical blocking moments with Bettie Rage
and Sic Shooter knocking skaters down, and Moonshine taking Pussy
Velour into row three of the Playland Skate Center audience during
the second half.
For the Hustlers, Dinah
Mite would execute several knockdowns and jammer takeouts. Curvette
would skate her usual solid blocking game, but would also jam
three times and get lead jammer status each of her three jams.
Cheap Trixie and Sedonya Face would have solid blocking games
for the team in purple.
Next up for the Texas
Rollergirls will be the championship bout on August 5th, when
the undefeated Hotrod Honeys will take on the also undefeated
Hell Marys. They previously met in June, but only got in a half
of play as a thunderstorm knocked out electricity at Playland.
The Hustlers and Honky Tonk Heartbreakers will also meet again
in the consolation match in August and by then hopefully both
teams will be healthy and back to full strength.
